About the Project

IDIAL – AI solutions for the sustainable digitization of SMEs

The IDIAL project (Intelligent Services: Innovative, Agile, Local) supports small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) in Germany on their way to digitization with custom-made Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions. Together with partners DFKI (Germany Research Center for Artificial Intelligence), ITA (Institute for Applied Ergonomics) and eBZ (eBusiness Competence Center), economic and practical approaches are being developed that optimize work processes and take into account the specific requirements of SMEs.

Challenges and Opportunities

Generative AI offers enormous potential for business processes, but is often too complex and costly for SMEs. High licensing and operating costs, data protection requirements, and a bewildering variety of solutions make implementation difficult. IDIAL aims to overcome these challenges by having DFKI develop specially tailored AI services geared toward the needs of smaller companies, while ITA contributes its background in ergonomics and eBZ guides towards a practical implementation.

A Practical Example: Efficiency in the Construction Industry

An example that illustrates the vision of IDIAL: a fictional construction company, “BuiltWell”, which works with a variety of legacy systems and data silos, receives systematic support through AI-based knowledge services. The company's knowledge and data are brought together so that work processes and decisions can be made more efficiently and on a more informed basis. Close cooperation with the eBZ ensures that the solutions are optimally designed for practical use in the construction and finishing industry.

Goals and Added Value

IDIAL promotes the digital sovereignty of small and medium-sized enterprises by providing economical and resource-efficient AI solutions that facilitate access to digitalization for SMEs. In addition to technical innovation, the focus is on practical, easily integrable solutions that contribute to the long-term competitiveness of SMEs and are suitable for practical use.

About the Project Partners

DFKI is one of the world's leading research centers for artificial intelligence. ITA supports companies in introducing technical innovations and contributes its expertise in ergonomics. eBZ enables practical implementation in the construction and finishing industry.

IDIAL thus stands for forward-looking digitalization in German SMEs.
